Frequently asked questions

How does Zuckerschmuck calculate the net carbs?

For the information shown in the shop, we subtract the listed polyols from the carbohydrates. Always compare the same reference amount, such as 100 g. This is our calculated net-carb figure and not an individual insulin-dosing recommendation.

How do I convert the net carbs into KE or BE?

Use the Diabetes KE Calculator from Zuckerschmuck: select an item from the range or enter the value per 100 g, specify the amount in grams, and the net carbs will be converted into KE and BE; the calculator does not provide a dosing recommendation. One KE corresponds to 10 g of carbohydrates, and one BE to 12 g of carbohydrates.

Is Diablo Chocolate Dessert Sauce a sugar-free chocolate sauce?

Yes, the nutrition facts list 0.5 g of sugar per 100 g.

Is Diablo Chocolate Dessert Sauce suitable for people with diabetes?

“For diabetics” is no longer an official product category for food. It is sweetened with maltitol.

* Note on carbohydrates: Polyols are listed under carbohydrates in the nutrition facts. We calculated the net carbs as carbohydrates minus polyols, as described by diabinfo, the diabetes information portal of Helmholtz Munich and the German Diabetes Center, for sugar substitutes. Some polyols are partially digested, so observe how your levels respond.

The values per serving were calculated from the manufacturer's information per 100 g.

You can find more treats with no added sugar at Diablo Sugar Free and in the overview Low Carb + sugar-free sweets. Read more about the topic in the guide Low-Carb Sweets for People with Diabetes.

What does 3g net carbohydrates per bar mean when there are actually more carbohydrates per serving? Low-carb products say "no sugar" on the packaging, but the carbohydrate content is usually very high. What does that mean, and how much insulin do I need as a diabetic? Carbohydrates from polyols have no effect on metabolism and do not raise blood sugar levels, so they do not need to be included in the insulin dose. Specifically, this means: check the packaging to see how many carbohydrates are listed. Subtract the information "of which polyols." This gives you the number you need to consider for your insulin dose.

How do I calculate insulin for low carb products?

FAQ FAQ

Low-carb products say "sugar-free" on the packaging, but the carbohydrates are usually very high. What does that mean and how much insulin do I need for it? The carbohydrates from polyhydric alcohols have no effect on the metabolism and do not increase blood sugar levels, so they do not need to be calculated in terms of insulin dosage. In concrete terms, this means: you check the packaging to see how many carbohydrates are stated. From that, you subtract the information "of which polyhydric alcohols". The result is the number that you need to take into account in terms of insulin dosage.
