Hyporest and diabetes: glucose with control
Especially in everyday life with diabetes, controlled glucose intake is important. According to the manufacturer, one level measuring spoon of Hyporest Original contains 5.1 g of dextrose, equivalent to 0.5 KE; one portion of four measuring spoons contains 20.4 g, equivalent to 2 KE [5].
Personal quantities for use around hypoglycaemia should be agreed with your diabetes care team and nutrition counselling service [2,3]. In cases of severe hypoglycaemia (unconsciousness, seizure), glucagon (prescription-only: GlucaGen HypoKit injection or Baqsimi nasal powder) and/or an emergency call to 112 is required [2,4].
You suck or chew classic hypo aids such as dextrose cubes or lollipops, so the sugar comes into contact with your teeth, including at night after brushing your teeth. According to the manufacturer, Hyporest tablets have an ultra-thin coating and are swallowed whole, so teeth and tongue do not come into contact with the sugar [5].
