Frequently asked questions

How does Zuckerschmuck calculate countable carbohydrates (Net Carbs)?

For the shop information, we subtract the listed polyols from the carbohydrates. Always compare the same reference quantity, such as 100 g. This is our calculated Net Carbs figure and not an individual insulin-dosing recommendation.

Is the Diablo milk chocolate with almonds sugar-free?

No. Diablo milk chocolate with almonds contains no added sugar; the sugar comes from the ingredients themselves. The manufacturer states 6.3 g of sugar per 100 g. “Without added sugar” therefore does not mean “sugar-free”: sugar-free chocolate may contain no more than 0.5 g of sugar per 100 g.

How do I convert the countable carbohydrates into KE or BE?

Use the Diabetes KE calculator from Zuckerschmuck: select an item from the range or enter the value per 100 g, enter the amount in grams, and the countable carbohydrates will be converted into KE and BE; the calculator does not provide a dosing recommendation. One KE equals 10 g of carbohydrates, and one BE equals 12 g of carbohydrates.

Ingredients

Sweeteners (maltitol and steviol glycosides (0.02%)), cocoa butter, whole milk powder, almonds (12%), cocoa mass, butter, emulsifier (soya lecithin), flavourings. Cocoa content at least 30%. Contains naturally occurring sugars.

Allergens: Contains milk and almonds. May contain traces of other nuts, sesame and soya.

Gluten-free.

Warning: Maltitol may have a laxative effect if consumed excessively.

During the summer months, the chocolate may melt due to high outside temperatures. We store it in a cool place, but cannot guarantee delivery without melting.

* Note on carbohydrates: Polyols are listed under carbohydrates in the nutrition table. We calculated the countable carbohydrates: carbohydrates minus polyols, as described by diabinfo, the diabetes information portal of Helmholtz Munich and the German Diabetes Center, for sugar substitutes. Some polyols are partially digested, so observe how your values respond.

According to the shop calculation, total carbohydrates minus polyols equals 7 g of countable carbohydrates per 100 g, or around 5.3 g per 75 g bar.

What does 3g net carbohydrates per bar mean when there are actually more carbohydrates per serving? Low-carb products say "no sugar" on the packaging, but the carbohydrate content is usually very high. What does that mean, and how much insulin do I need as a diabetic? Carbohydrates from polyols have no effect on metabolism and do not raise blood sugar levels, so they do not need to be included in the insulin dose. Specifically, this means: check the packaging to see how many carbohydrates are listed. Subtract the information "of which polyols." This gives you the number you need to consider for your insulin dose.

How do I calculate insulin for low carb products?

FAQ FAQ

Low-carb products say "sugar-free" on the packaging, but the carbohydrates are usually very high. What does that mean and how much insulin do I need for it? The carbohydrates from polyhydric alcohols have no effect on the metabolism and do not increase blood sugar levels, so they do not need to be calculated in terms of insulin dosage. In concrete terms, this means: you check the packaging to see how many carbohydrates are stated. From that, you subtract the information "of which polyhydric alcohols". The result is the number that you need to take into account in terms of insulin dosage.
