The aim of the Abbott FreeStyle Libre is to make your life with diabetes as easy as possible. This popular glucose meter of the second - and now the third - generation offers the highest level of measuring convenience for your everyday life. "Scanning instead of pricking" is the motto. Abbott FreeStyle Libre II and III offer the "Flash Glucose Measuring System", which is significantly different from conventional blood sugar measurement.
The sensor in the new Abbott Freestyle Libre III is actually the smallest one currently available on the market. It is only the size of a 5 cent coin.
While you could previously only measure your current sugar level as a snapshot by pricking your finger, the FreeStyle Libre system measures your sugar directly in the tissue. You continuously receive a complete picture of the changing values and you can understand any effects of different foods, physical activities and insulin much better. This allows you to optimize your diabetes therapy - together with your doctor.

1. Attach the sensor
You attach the sensor to the back of your upper arm. You place a small, 5 millimeter long, flexible sensor under the skin. Don't worry: most people find this painless. From now on, the sensor can continuously measure your sugar levels and save them automatically.
You can also wear the sensor while showering, bathing, swimming or in the sauna because it is waterproof. This means you can continue to enjoy maximum freedom in your everyday life.
2. Retrieve measured values
Reading your sugar levels is not only convenient with the Abbott FreeStyle Libre system. You also get more extensive data than "just" your current sugar level. You simply scan the sensor with the reader (with the Freestyle Libre 2) or your smartphone (with the Freestyle Libre 3) to read your glucose levels. A trend arrow shows you in which direction your glucose levels are moving and a diagram shows you how the value has developed over the past 8 hours.
The daily diagrams are also more extensive. They show the daily patterns in the data and you can overlay and compare the sugar levels. This way you can identify your individual optimization potential and discuss it with your doctor. So you will be optimally prepared for your next doctor's visit.
If you like to challenge yourself, you can also use the special Time in Target Range report to see the percentage of time your sugar levels were above, below, or within your glucose target range.
3. Combine with the app
If you wish, you can also use the FreeStyleLink app to inform your family members, friends or therapists about your glucose levels and trends via your smartphone. The app is approved for use with the FreeStyle Libre II sensor, among others.
